Excel Workshop for Beginners

Cook and Chat

Senior’s Cooking Class

This class, led by Thomas and Sophia, is available to anyone age 55+. Sign up now as it’s only running for 3 weeks from January 31 to February 14! This in-person class will show you easy ways to make nutritious, affordable and multicultural meals at home.

Meals will be inspired by whoever joins, you can have a say in what we learn to cook! Learn skills for cooking if you have trouble with fine-motor skills that are necessary for many different dishes.

Ukulele Classes

This is a new 12-week class starting in the New Year! It’s a no-experience-required Ukulele Class for folks with mild to moderate dementia and their caregivers as well as seniors. 

Over the duration of the course, you will learn 3 – 4 chords and a variety of song choices and different decades of music.

Community Yoga

Stretching and Mediation

Fridays   | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm  |  In-person at Brentwood House (2055 Rosser Ave.)

Explore holistic stretching and meditation techniques that combines motion and inaction to cultivate both the interior and exterior of the body. Much like Qi Gong, in this practice you will learn a set of exercises known for rejuvenating and energizing.

With minimal instruction, participants can easily follow along and gradually understand the movements.

The Winter term runs from January 26 – March 22, 2024.

Would you like learn to use email, create files and documents, use excel, search the Internet or practice typing and writing skills on a computer? Volunteer Computer Instructors are available to help community residents with their computer learning needs. We offer support in multiple languages.

Come share in our love of Mahjong! This community-led group will meet every other week at 11 am North Burnaby Neighbourhood House (4908 Hastings St.) to play an Asian (Hong Kong style) version of the game.

Mahjong is a challenging game that involves skill and (sometimes!) luck. Quick thinking and mental complexity are always present in the game. It keeps the mind sharp and in good health.

New players of all levels of experience are welcome — whether you’re a pro, need to sharpen your skills, or are just learning to play, there’s a table waiting for you! If you have never played before members will be happy to share their love of the game and teach others to play.

Beginners Line Dancing

Qi Gong – Saturday Class

Qi Gong is a personal practice that led to fitness, flexibility, and internal peace that combines the physical benefits of exercise with the spiritual qualities of meditation, leading to full nourishment of both mind and body.

There are many different types of Qi Gong practices, but most of them involve slow-moving exercises that reflect the qualities of nature.

Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors

Burnaby Neighbourhood House is launching a new, low-cost, social activity day program for Burnaby seniors, called TAPS. The program is funded by the Government of BC and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland. See poster for details.

Free Legal Clinic

4th Tuesday of every month |  10:00 am – 1:00 pm |  In-person at Brentwood House
Are you looking for legal advice? Seniors First BC are here to help. Come for a free 30-minute consultation on the 4th Tuesday of every month at their Brentwood clinic (2055 Rosser Ave).
 
Among other things, they will be able to help you understand what legal proceedings are, what to expect in courts and get help in drafting wills or power of attorney.

Grocery/Meal Delivery Program

We provide food hampers, prepared meals, and grocery shopping & free delivery to seniors who are living with health challenges and are experiencing food insecurity.

Frozen Meals for Seniors

If you are in need of a little extra support in the kitchen we provide delicious home-cooked meals in our licensed kitchen.

These are available for purchase at the South House for $7 each. Subsidies to help with cost are available.

Need help completing your CPP, OAS, GIS, BC Housing Registry, SAFER or BC Bus Pass application? Trained volunteers will assist you with completing forms and provide information about local resources and services to help meet your needs.
