Shadow Art: One of My Favourite Things

Shadow Art is a learning through play workshop for children age 4 to 10, who want to learn how to use light and shadows to draw and tell a story about “one of their favourite things" together with their parent(s).

Parents will be present with their children to engage them, guide their actions, and photograph them, while the child draws their chosen object and answers questions about why this is their favourite object (i.e. favourite toy).

The workshop is facilitated by Ana-Francisca Haas, a Watercolour Artist, and photographs would be pulled together by Yunuen Perez Vertti, a Filmmaker & Digital Media Artist.

Note: the session is part of Burnaby Festival of Learning event.

Foundations of Leadership for Grade 8-9 (In-person & Online)

Foundations provides youth the opportunity to learn about leadership while exploring ways to turn life into an adventure, as part of a team. It aims to support youth in their journey of self-discovery and belonging, teach them how to engage in their community, and become an everyday hero. We will create a safe space for youth to grow their skills, identify and develop strengths, all while being supported in expressing themselves. Not to mention, fun activities, and snacks. By exploring personal, social and global responsibility, we aim to support you in discovering and developing meaningful opportunities for community engagement and volunteering. What talents, skills and passions do you have that you can bring to your community? What kind of change do you want to bring to the world? This program is also a way for you to complete the required ‘Career Prep’ hours for High School graduation. Basic Korean Program (Online)

Anyone wants to learn basic Korean Language? Even if you don’t know how to read and write, we have a class for you to join every Wednesday at 7 pm.

The program is to introduce students to the language, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at an essential level. These classes are being designed to be interactive and engaging. All ages welcome!

Whether you’re a fan of Korean music, drama and movies, it’d be nice to learn the basic words to understand, so that you can simply enjoy without a subtitle.

Gimme Shelter Meditation Project (In-person)

You are invited to experience a calming meditation session under a large, colourful blanket, handmade by artist Jennie Johnston.

Relish in the comfort that only a childhood blanket fort can offer! Participants are invited to close their eyes and experience a calming meditation session underneath the blanket and installed in a natural setting.

The fort offers an immersive art experience. It creates a tranquil space for contemplation and meditation, allowing participants to connect to their inner child and feel the security of a structure built for soothing the senses and facilitating safe outdoor connection with nature and others in their community.

During the event, every participant will need to wear a mask; hand sanitize their hands before and after the workshop. The workshop leader/artist and a volunteer will ensure that all guidelines are followed. Only one individual or bubble group living in the same household will be allowed per session.

Each session will have 30 minutes allotted. Ten minutes for arrival, 15 minutes under the blanket, and 5 minutes for participants to exit the area and allow the next individual or bubble group to arrive.

Mapping our Community: Photography Series (Online)

Three-part workshop series exploring community through plant medicine and the medium of photography.

Artist, Rebecca Heyl and Métis herbalist and educator, Lori Snyder, with support from the Burnaby Neighbourhood House lead a three-part workshop series exploring the possibility of creating a community map using photographic processes. Mapping will be used as a way to show what is of value to the community. Smartphone tips and techniques will be provided to teach you how to best capture images from around your community. Images will be shared and will represent a multiplicity of perspectives.

The workshops culminate at the Burnaby Festival of Learning, in May, with an online nature walk, featuring an introduction to traditional plants led by Lori Snyder. Following the nature walk, participants will learn how to create a map of local plants captured by the sun on a large fabric mural using the *Cyanotype photographic process.

*Cyanotype is a photographic printing process invented in 1842 that captures a shadow image as a cyan-blue print. This technique has been used to study botanicals and share knowledge, most notably by Anna Atkins in her 1843 book, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions.

Seniors' Centre Without Walls (Online)

Join our interactive telephone-based program to socialize, learn, laugh and create connections! SCWW is available to seniors living in Burnaby who are experiencing barriers in accessing community resources to stay active and independent. Session topics include Mindfulness & Meditation; Travel; Safety, Privacy and Rights; Explore Burnaby and more! Each session is around 30 minutes long.

On the day and time of the session you have registered for, you will receive a phone call informing you that the session is about to begin. To join the conference call, just dial ‘1’ when prompted! It's as easy as that. No need to remember multiple phone numbers or access codes!

SCWW is funded by the Government of BC and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

Senior’s Conversation Group (Online)

The Senior's Conversation Group is established to help senior’s adjust to the transition of socializing online, especially during this time of COVID19. We are a group of 4-6 participants and are welcoming more members. Each week, the facilitator will bring a topic (past topics have included: setting goals, fun mental health tips, and trivia games). You are welcome to talk about anything from book/ movie recommendations and share your cooking, art, or anything else that comes to mind.

The coronavirus is changing how we live our everyday lives. Being inside the house may be difficult for some people who are used to going out to meet their friends or being active outdoors. With many places closed and some events called off for the unforeseeable future, it also highlights how much we all need social connection. That is why we’re doing the best we can to help seniors stay connected.

Please join us for a virtual group chat via Zoom to meet new friends and help keep the mind active! This chat room can serve as a portal to meet new people, share interests and remain social. Mother Goose Program (Online)

A fun group experience that introduces parents and their babies & toddlers (aged two and under) to the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs, and stories together. Parents and caregivers gain skills and confidence that enable them to create positive family patterns during their children’s crucial early years. The program focuses on helping young children with their social, cognitive and emotional development. Please see the poster for more info.

Family Place (Online)

Families will have the opportunity to connect with and support each other in our community. With the same nursery rhymes, story time and a wide variety of kid activities that support your child development, our goal is to make our families feel like they’re right back at our Family Drop-In – but in the comforts of your own home! Information on community resources and parenting support are also available. All families with children aged 0-5 years are welcome. Please see poster in English and Spanish for more details
