Recipes to Try
BNH has over 100 staff and 450 volunteers – all from different backgrounds and cultures.
We asked some of our staff and volunteers to share some of their favourite recipes from their culture. Check it out below!
Benia, one of our Front Desk Volunteers, shared this delicious Ghanian recipe – Banku and Fried Tilapia.
Some tips from Benia: “I get the corn flour from African Superstore in Surrey and I purchase frozen tilapia from Superstore in Burnaby.”
Taz, one of our Front Desk Volunteers, shared her recipe that she grew up eating in Kenya – Cassava and Mixed Vegetables.
Taz says: “Here are two of my recipe creations. The small bowl is Cassava, a well known and staple diet of African People and others around the world. The second dish is finely chopped vegetables cooked in a vegetarian broth and gentle spices. My recipes are all about Flavour, not Spicy nor hot. Just simple and healthy food. Enjoy!”
Of course Lynn, our Community Kitchens Coordinator, has a recipe to share! This is one of her favourites – a Bread Pudding recipe that is great for those cold, rainy days in Burnaby.
Maria, our Youth and Child Coordinator, shares one of her favourite snacks – Columbian Arepa!
Kimiko, our Lochdale SACC Site Supervisor, shares one of our favourite recipes – Japanese Chicken Curry over Rice. Yum!
Nazanin, our Gilpin SACC Site Supervisor, shares one of her favourite Persian recipes – Khoresh Gheymeh.
Kumarika, one of our SACC Program Leaders, was generous to share one of her favourite Sri Lankan snacks – Spicy Fish Cutlets!
Ella, one of our SACC Program Leaders, likes to make this Green Fig and Saltfish dish to celebrate International Creole Day.
Ella says: “You can get the saltfish at Consumers Produce on Kingsway, and 7 Days Seafood and Groceries in Surrey.”
