We are committed to make Burnaby a better place to live and work through bringing neighbours together to build a strong community. Our staff and volunteers actively participate in a number of inter-agency committees, festivals and events throughout the year.

Sharing Cultures Nights

Monthly nights are organized by a committee of local residents at various locations throughout Burnaby. Each night features a cultural theme and is a great place to relax, and meet your neighbours.

Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children (children3 and under are free).

Reservation is required.

Small Grants Program

Burnaby Neighbourhood House and Vancouver Foundation offer grants of up to $500 to projects organized by residents of Burnaby that will improve local neighbourhoods. It is a wonderful opportunity for neighbours to get together, plan and organize events in their neighbourhood, while developing a sense of community connections and pride. Applications are due in February each year and projects take place from April 1st to the end of October.

Community Adult Literacy Program

The Burnaby Community Adult Literacy program offered by the Burnaby Neighbourhood House since Dec. 2011 is the only literacy program available in Burnaby.

We at the Burnaby Neighbourhood house have been working hard to improve and increase literacy in the Burnaby community through the CALP. The CALP supports English speakers who lack basic reading and writing skills by pairing them with a trained tutor who they meet once a week for 2 hour sessions. Learners are assessed before being accepted into the program to know what their goals are and an individual learning plan is created to support their learning curve.
Here is what some of our tutors have to say about volunteering in the program;
• “ It is important to give back to one’s community and it is now my turn to make a contribution and assist my neighbours”
• “I’d like to be more involved with the local community”
• “I want to be able to share the value of literacy with those for whom it is not and has not been as readily accessible. I want to share what I know of the beauty of the language”

Robert-CALP Program

“Hi I am Robert, I am learning how to read. I am in the Douglas College I-Care Program in New Westminster,I have been in the class for two years now. I was with a tutor in the class. The tutor gave me the number of Rajeeta of Burnaby Neighbourhood House. In a week Rajeeta called to tell me she had a tutor for me. Her name was Gaye M Folker. Gaye called me to set up a time to meet. We set up a time to meet at Metrotown
to find out if we could match. We set up a time to start the tutoring. Gaye asked me if I would like to use a computer. I said yes but I don’t have one of my own. I went home and called my sister to see if her boys had an old computer.
An hour later she called me back to tell me they had found me a computer. The next Monday I went to school and met up with Gaye. We set up an email address and internet access. She showed me how to use it. Gaye has been a great help to me. Gaye has found ways for me to do more and more with the computer. I am thankful for her help.
I am learning to find out about my favourite things, fishing, trucks, and woodworking. I want to thank Burnaby Neighbourhood House and C.A.L.P for this very useful help.”

Annual Street Party & Summer BBQ

The BNH Annual Street Party & Summer BBQ is an open event to the public and is intended to promote the Neighbourhood House’s work in building welcoming and inclusive neighbourhoods. We close a portion of Beresford Street to vehicle traffic and invite our partners and sponsors to join us in this family-friendly event. 

This event attracts more and more residents every year, and ancitipate a large number of people in attendance, due to our location being next to the Metrotown Skytrain Station. 

The event includes:

  • Local musicians
  • Children and family activities – games, face painting and crafts
  • Interactive booths hosted by community partners and local businesses
  • Bouncy castle
  • Seating areas for people to relax and converse
  • Community BBQ
