Please join our weekly computer workshops, starting on Monday, November 25 at BNH South House. Each week we will be covering a different topic.
Nov 25 – Intro to iPhones: This will cover the basics of iPhones, including how to check notifications and missed calls, connecting to WiFi vs. data, checking your battery and storage and more!
Dec 2 – Safe Online Shopping: Want to do your holiday shopping safely and securely? In this session we will explore how to spot trustworthy websites, how to keep your credit card information secure, buyer protection tips, and more!
Dec 9 – Intro to Android Phones: Having troubles using your Android phone? We will cover topics such as how to check notifications and missed calls, connecting to WiFi vs. data, checking your battery and storage and more!
Dec 16 – Google Maps and Google Search: Learn how to efficiently search for information, filter results, and get quick answers using helpful search techniques. We’ll also dive into Google Maps to help you navigate your world with confidence—whether finding local businesses, planning routes, or exploring new places.

Tai Chi Program with Fatemeh

Step into relaxation and rejuvenation with our Chen Tai chi program, led by the skilled instructor Fatemeh. This class is a perfect blend of gentle exercise and mindful movement, designed to help you unwind and energize.
Join us weekly to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and connect with your body in a whole new way. Breathe, move, and find balance—one session at a time.
The program runs on Tuesdays from January 7 to March 25, 2025 with no classes on Jan 21, Feb 18 and March 18, 2025.

Farmers’ Market Coupon Program
Application Deadline: 3:30 pm on Friday, June 14, 2024 |
The applications for the program will be accepted during the first two weeks of June. The selection of the coupon recipients will happen in the following weeks, and the meetings to award the coupons will happen regularly until September.
1. Requirements to qualify for the program. Apply if you are:
– A Burnaby Resident and a member of BNH.
– A person with low income.
– Pregnant, Senior or a family with children under 19 years old.
– Committed to visit any of the farmers’ markets and use the coupons or return them to us.

3. There’s a limited quantity of coupons awarded for this program.

Beginners Line Dancing

Are you familiar with line dancing? Line dancing is a Western and Country style of dance where people stand in rows and perform choreographed movements together, sometimes in partners. The music and dancing will give you the energy you need to power through your day!
Catherine will be leading this program starting on November 7. It will run on Thursday mornings from 10am to 12pm at the Amazing Brentwood Mall until the end of March 2025. Please note that we are looking for committed learners, because this is not a drop-in class.

Ukulele Connection

Come join a fun-filled evening of music-making and community connection at this twice monthly “Ukulele Jam”. This event is open to all ukulele enthusiasts from beginner to advanced. All ages are welcome.
There will be a skill-building portion of the evening led by Peter Luongo, founder of the Langley Ukulele Association, followed by a group jam and sing-a-long, ending in an opportunity for you to perform or listen to solo players or groups or to lead a song (Open-mic style).
If you don’t own a ukulele, you are still welcome to come and sing along.
There will be a printed songbook which participants can purchase for $10 or a .pdf download available upon request and songs will be projected on a screen. This event runs on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month from 6-9pm. (See poster for itinerary.)

Stretching and Mediation

Explore holistic stretching and meditation techniques that combines motion and inaction to cultivate both the interior and exterior of the body. Much like Qi Gong, in this practice you will learn a set of exercises known for rejuvenating and energizing.
With minimal instruction, participants can easily follow along and gradually understand the movements.

Would you like learn to use email, create files and documents, use excel, search the Internet or practice typing and writing skills on a computer? Volunteer Computer Instructors are available to help community residents with their computer learning needs. We offer support in multiple languages.
Drop in to this in-person program at the North House, South House or Brentwood. No registration required.

Mahjong Club
Come share in our love of Mahjong! This community-led group will meet every other week at 11 am North Burnaby Neighbourhood House (4908 Hastings St.) to play an Asian (Hong Kong style) version of the game.
Mahjong is a challenging game that involves skill and (sometimes!) luck. Quick thinking and mental complexity are always present in the game. It keeps the mind sharp and in good health.
New players of all levels of experience are welcome — whether you’re a pro, need to sharpen your skills, or are just learning to play, there’s a table waiting for you! If you have never played before members will be happy to share their love of the game and teach others to play.

Community Adult Literacy Program (CALP)
The Burnaby Community Adult Literacy program offered by the Burnaby Neighbourhood House since Dec. 2011 is the only literacy program available in Burnaby.
We have been working hard to improve and increase literacy in the Burnaby community through CALP. The program supports English speakers who lack basic reading and writing skills by pairing them with a trained tutor who they meet once a week for 2 hour sessions. Learners are assessed before being accepted into the program to know what their goals are and an individual learning plan is created to support their learning curve.

Beginners Line Dancing

Qi Gong is a personal practice that led to fitness, flexibility, and internal peace that combines the physical benefits of exercise with the spiritual qualities of meditation, leading to full nourishment of both mind and body.
There are many different types of Qi Gong practices, but most of them involve slow-moving exercises that reflect the qualities of nature.

In partnership with the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program, LSLAP assists low-income earners who live in the lower Mainland of BC with various legal issues, including:

- Small Claims (must be a civil claim under $25,000, $35,000 if filed after June 1st, 2017);
- Employment Standards;
- Residential Tenancy;
- WorkSafe BC;

- Employment Insurance;
- CPP and Old-Age Pension;
- Wills and Estates; and
- Immigration and Refugee Matters.
