Programs and services aims to support seniors and caregiver to enhance their quality of life and maintain the greatest level of independence and dignity possible.

Programs

A family or friend caregiver is someone who gives care and support to an adult family member or friend. Family and friend caregivers are the unsung heroes in our community. They look after our most vulnerable community members and provide over 80% of eldercare, often at a significant cost to themselves. With support, they can relieve the health care system. Without help they can become ill or burned out. It makes great sense to support caregivers as their struggles touch our hearts.

More than 85,000 people are currently living with dementia in this province. By 2050, that figure will triple. As part of the City of Burnaby’s Dementia Friendly Community Action Plan, Burnaby Seniors Outreach developed dementia programs in 2018. Programs include a monthly Dementia Friendly Cafe for people living with dementia and their caregivers and loved ones. Sessions include socialization and connection as well as informative workshops on various dementia and health-related topics. A weekly Seniors Memory Club is also offered as a social club for people living with memory loss and their loved ones to gather, sing, laugh, exercise, and have fun!

Burnaby Seniors Outreach trains volunteers (55+) to provide 1-on-1 peer support to other seniors in the community. Volunteers work with seniors to achieve goals related to their well-being (examples: combatting isolation and loneliness, reducing caregiver stress, dealing with post-retirement).

ABOUT

Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services is a charitable society and since 1987 we have been providing emotional support and encouragement to older citizens of Burnaby through senior peer counselling, caregiver support, and other related activities.  We assist seniors to enhance their quality of life, to develop problem management strategies, and to maintain their greatest level of independence and dignity.  In 2019, the society began Burnaby’s very first dementia-friendly café, and this was followed shortly by their dementia-friendly, multicultural, intergenerational choir named, “The New Dementians”. We continue to evolve our services to assist seniors in our community.

Testimonials

“My father, was part of your dementia program last year. I just wanted to take a moment to say "thank you so much" for being so welcoming and supportive of him and my mom, who also joined the class with him. You create an incredibly inclusive and positive environment and a truly fun one too. I'm sure the work you do has helped so many feel a sense of community, connection, and increased levels of mental health and joy.”
