Food Security Programs

Food Security Programs Overview

With funding from the United Way of BC, Neighbourhood House Food Hubs support local community members experiencing food insecurity. Food security is a growing emergency in our community and our local neighbourhoods.  Families, individuals and seniors struggling with our increasing cost of living are finding themselves unable to afford to purchase healthy food. The BNH Food Hubs are a community-based response to this growing crisis. With active volunteers, donations from local businesses and community members, funding from the United Way of BC, and ongoing food resources from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, each Hub is open weekly to local neighbours. At BNH, food hub participants are greeted by name, are offered a coffee and a warm smile and receive information and referrals to other programs and services that support their needs.

Our mandate includes:

  • Coordinating food security issues for Burnaby residents who are experiencing food insecurity
  • Supporting individuals and families who have loss of employment and/or are low income with food hampers
  • Coordinating response in Burnaby for Food Sourcing, storage facilities, transportation and volunteer management relating to Food security issues

BNH Food Hubs Good Food Policy

At BNH Food Hubs, we strive to provide a pleasing selection of fresh, healthy, local, and culturally appropriate foods for our participants in the Burnaby community. We know that community benefactors may elect to buy less expensive food options when shopping for a food bank, hoping to stretch their donation dollars so that as much food as possible is provided. While this is a noble intention, these less expensive foods are often high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats, and can contribute to unhealthy eating habits and nutrition-related medical issues over the long term. Therefore, by naming specific foods in our “Good Food Policy,” we hope to move toward these two important goals:

1. Inform and educate our donors and participants about healthy foods that are suitable for donation and distribution through our Food Hubs

2. Contribute positively toward the nutritional health of our participants by maintaining a dedicated focus on continuing to improve the healthy food selections we offer

Armed with this knowledge, we hope that our generous donors will use our Policy to help inform their choices when shopping, fundraising, or organizing food drives in our community to support their neighbors who experience barriers in setting their tables with fresh, nutritious, and delicious food each day.

Requesting a change or addition to the map

Is there something missing from the map? Or perhaps an inaccuracy in a program or service you are familiar with? This map requires input from the community to ensure it is up to date and able to serve those who need it best. There are a few pieces of information which will help make an addition to the map:

1. The name of the program, service, company, or organization

2. The exact location, whether it’s an address, GPS coordinates or intersection

3. The category and type the asset belongs in, refer to map menu for complete list

4. Any additional info such as; contact info, hours of operation, specific service details etc.

To make an update or change to the map, send as much of the above information as possible to northinfo@burnabynh.ca or call (604) 294-5444.
